18+ only. This JOI AI review covers the consumer terms for ordinary use with fictional adult characters. Three things need to be kept apart: a Premium subscription, bot add-ons paid for separately, and Neurons spent on particular access actions. An add-on described as indefinite does not replace Premium. The published U.S. terms say that losing Premium suspends access to those add-ons.
The same terms give joi.com as the statement descriptor. They list a charge of 4 Neurons to read one romantic message, up to 120 to view a photo and up to 1,900 to view a video. These are charges for access or viewing. They have not been shown to be image-generation prices. To decide what you'll spend in Canada, you need the actual subscription amount, the currency and the Neuron purchase your account is offered, alongside those units.
Privacy matters too. The policy says messages help improve responses and develop AI. It names NOVI LIMITED in Cyprus as controller, while the U.S. terms name Lanoto Solutions Inc. as operator. These are two companies with two roles, and the names are not interchangeable. However friendly a character is, the payment and data-processing terms stay the same.
Scores by criterion
Provisional (7/8 criteria). Scores are computed from each app's published terms, pricing, policies and store listings on the dates shown. We have not yet run paid test accounts; when we do, experience criteria will be added and the cap on the total score removed. Affiliate links never change a score. A score marked Full data rests on all eight criteria. Provisional means five to seven criteria could be scored from published facts. Limited data means only three or four criteria could be scored; such totals are capped at 3.5 and should be read as a floor, not a verdict. Apps with fewer than three scorable criteria get no total. Totals are weighted means of the scored criteria only and move when missing facts get documented. Full methodology

Terms and regulatory dates
We checked the published terms, privacy policy and regulatory record on 2026-10-28 and updated this article on 2026-10-29. The privacy policy is dated June 4, 2026. Ofcom's investigation record reports that the case closed on July 31, 2026, without findings on compliance.
Access charges are not the same as generation costs
JOI uses Neurons for specified access actions. Its U.S. terms list 4 Neurons for reading one romantic message, up to 120 for viewing a photo and up to 1,900 for viewing a video. The words "up to" appear in the photo and video descriptions, so these amounts should not be read as one fixed rate for every image or video interaction.
The wording also separates viewing from creating. What it costs to view an item says nothing about what it costs to generate a new one, and a message-access charge is not a universal cost for every ordinary text exchange. When you check an account's balance, keep the action label next to the amount.
Premium is a separate subscription. The published terms describe monthly, quarterly, half-year and yearly periods, all renewing automatically. Bot add-ons can be paid for separately and still depend on Premium. If you look only at a single add-on payment, you can miss the ongoing subscription you need to use it.
For a Canadian budget, start with the amount, currency, period and tax treatment on the purchase confirmation. A table of Neuron quantities cannot give you a cash exchange rate. Read the pack your account is currently offered and the subscription terms attached to that purchase. Don't borrow a price from another storefront or an unrelated review.
The payment descriptions include cards, wallet options on supported devices, and crypto where offered. That doesn't mean every method is available for every Canadian transaction. Check the method on your actual confirmation and keep the receipt. The payment channel also matters later if you need to identify a charge or change a subscription.
| Action in the published U.S. terms | Neuron charge | What the statement covers |
|---|---|---|
| Read one romantic message | 4 Neurons | A named message-access category |
| View one photo | Up to 120 Neurons | Viewing, not a verified generation price |
| View one video | Up to 1,900 Neurons | The upper limit of the stated viewing charge |
Features can depend on the subscription and device
JOI's terms describe a web service with voice messages, voice calls, video calls and photo or video content. Calling depends on the device, region and subscription. If voice is the main reason you're considering an account, that matters: a general feature list does not mean every account will get the same calling option.
Voice messages and live calls are different formats. You can listen to a recorded response whenever it suits you, while a live call has its own interaction and access requirements. The fact that either feature exists tells you nothing measured about sound quality, response delay or how naturally a character handles an ordinary conversation.
The media charges need careful reading as well. The photo figure of up to 120 Neurons is about viewing. It is not an image-generation rate, a monthly image quota included with a plan, or proof that a given creative feature comes with Premium. The same goes for the figure of up to 1,900 Neurons for viewing a video.
The link between Premium and add-ons matters most for a long-running fictional project. An add-on can be described as indefinite and still require the underlying membership. Before paying, look at the feature you want together with what it depends on, and don't assume that an item that looks like a one-off purchase gives permanent standalone access. Keep your own notes on the story outside the account so the project isn't tied entirely to a paid entitlement.
Adult controls do not remove the restrictions
JOI describes itself as an 18+ service with mature-content controls and ongoing safety restrictions. For the ordinary fictional use covered here, every character should be an invented adult, and you should follow the service's current rules. Paying for membership or changing a content setting does not lift the restrictions on harmful or non-consensual material.
Whether your account is eligible, what subject matter is allowed and what access costs are three separate questions. A Neuron balance tells you how much of a resource you have, not whether a request is permitted. In the same way, having an adult control does not mean every media feature follows the same rules, and a private conversation does not exempt anyone from them.
The controller and the U.S. terms operator have different roles
The privacy policy we checked on 2026-10-28 names NOVI LIMITED in Cyprus as controller. The U.S. terms name Lanoto Solutions Inc. in the United States as the operator for that document. Each name should stay attached to its role. The difference is a disclosure worth understanding. On its own it does not prove wrongdoing, and it is no reason to swap one entity for the other.
The privacy policy, dated June 4, 2026, says messages can help improve replies and develop AI. That's a good reason to keep sensitive information out of a fictional conversation. A character's reassurance or an interface that looks private is not a promise that processing happens only on your own device.
The policy ties retention to service needs and legal interests. It also notes that third parties may keep earlier copies. So a deletion action shouldn't be described as an instant guarantee that every copy is gone. Decide what you're willing to share with that in mind before you build up a detailed account history.
The deletion options described are removing the profile on the website or asking for help. Support is at [email protected], and the policy routes data-protection contact through the support team. Keep a request to the account and the action you need. A billing or deletion question doesn't require you to disclose the whole conversation.
For comparison, Nomi says it removes account data in about 28 days, with exceptions, and states plainly that it lacks end-to-end encryption. Those statements belong to Nomi and cannot be read into JOI's policy as deadlines. The Canadian account and payment guide helps separate a local purchase question from a provider's own processing terms.
Read the age rule separately from a completed check
The terms rely on an 18+ age declaration and allow for additional assurance where law or payment-network rules require it. An individual account may therefore be asked for more than a declaration. Answer the current prompts truthfully, and don't assume a particular document provider based on the policy's general wording.
The dated UK regulatory record adds one narrower fact: Ofcom says age assurance was implemented during its investigation. That statement concerns the service and investigation the UK authority describes. It does not show that every Canadian user sees the same procedure, or that a Canadian account has been successfully tested.
Keep your own eligibility separate from the fictional character's background. An adult label is not a technical privacy certificate, and it says nothing about how natural a call or conversation feels. If an account requirement affects your decision, sort it out before you sign up for a recurring subscription.
Identify the recurring agreement in My Subscriptions
The U.S. terms give joi.com as the billing descriptor and My Subscriptions as the place to cancel an active subscription. When matching a statement entry, use the receipt, subscription term and account identifier along with the descriptor. A Neuron purchase and a Premium renewal are different kinds of spending, even on the same account.
Under the published terms, Premium renews automatically, with monthly, quarterly, half-year and yearly periods. Read the renewal conditions for the purchase you select before you authorize it. Opening the subscription-management page does not cancel anything. Complete the cancellation and keep the confirmation.
Look at the add-on dependency at the same time. The terms say that losing Premium suspends access to paid bot add-ons, so an indefinite add-on payment does not replace the membership. If you're stopping a recurring charge, work out which features depend on it instead of assuming that each item you bought separately will keep working on its own.
The 4-Neuron charge for the named message-access category is a separate consumption fact. It doesn't explain a subscription renewal amount or any refund entitlement. If a charge is confusing, match it to the item and payment agreement rather than relying on the familiar descriptor alone.
The Ofcom closure is neither an open case nor certification
Regulatory record checked on 2026-10-28.
Ofcom opened an age-assurance investigation into NOVI LTD and Joi on January 15, 2026. Its record says the investigation closed on July 31, 2026, after age assurance was implemented. It closed without findings on compliance, because enforcement was no longer an administrative priority. Calling it an ongoing investigation would leave out that later outcome.
The reverse shortcut is just as misleading. Closing a case without a compliance finding does not certify that every practice meets every applicable rule. Keep the event, the jurisdiction and the date together. The record does not show a Canadian ban, a Canadian approval or the exact steps an individual user will see.
Other purchasing risks are more direct. Recurring Premium, Neuron spending and paid add-ons can add up. The Trustpilot profile we checked showed 3.9 from 263 reviews, but that average doesn't tell you what your own account choices will cost. A review score is no substitute for a budget, so read the agreement and the resource charges.
Compare billing models instead of unlike credit totals
JOI's published access charges, Nomi's credit schedule, Secrets' Moments and OurDream's Dreamcoins all measure different activities. A large number of units in one system does not mean better value than a small number in another. Start with the activity, then look at the amount and the purchase channel that apply to it.
The broader companion comparison can help you find alternatives for ordinary fictional conversation. Use it to compare a specific requirement, such as recurring free text or a documented cost per call minute, and don't assume all paid plans include the same features.
| Service | Published example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| JOI | 4 Neurons for one romantic message | Access to a named message category |
| Nomi | 50 free text messages daily | Recurring free text allowance |
| Secrets | 50 Moments for an audio-call minute | Charged by duration |
| OurDream | 1,000 Dreamcoins with Standard Monthly | Resources allocated with a subscription |
A decision for someone comfortable with several payment layers
JOI's terms suit a buyer who is willing to keep separate track of the Premium agreement, add-on dependencies and Neuron use. The stated charges of 4 Neurons per message and up to 120 Neurons per photo view give you units to check, but you still have to read the cash purchase your account is offered.
It's a poor fit for an impulse purchase if you expect one payment to cover every feature permanently. Because the privacy policy allows messages to be used for improvement and AI development, it's also the wrong place to keep a confidential record of sensitive personal information. Keep the project fictional and the financial commitment clear.
What we like
- Use the documented statement name and management page to identify an existing agreement.
- Check each paid feature against the membership it depends on.
What could be better
- Don't read indefinite add-on wording as a standalone lifetime membership.
- Don't take a regulatory closure as a blanket privacy or compliance guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
What are Neurons used for?
The published U.S. terms assign Neurons to particular access actions: 4 Neurons to read one romantic message, up to 120 Neurons to view a photo and up to 1,900 Neurons to view a video. These labels cover access or viewing. They are not verified generation prices or a universal rate for ordinary text.
Does an indefinite bot add-on replace Premium?
No. The terms make paid bot add-ons dependent on Premium and say access is suspended if Premium is lost. That dependency holds even when an item looks like a one-off purchase. A Neuron access charge, such as 4 for the named message category, is yet another part of the payment model.
For a broader account comparison, the companion feature guide separates subscription access from optional activity costs.
What name appears on the statement?
The U.S. terms give joi.com as the billing descriptor. Keep the receipt, the period you chose and the item name with it. The descriptor is the service's stated charge label, but on its own it doesn't tell you whether a payment was for Premium, an add-on or Neurons.
How do I cancel a subscription?
The documented control is My Subscriptions, where you can cancel the active subscription. Finish the cancellation and keep the confirmation. The terms offer several billing periods for Premium, and ending it affects access to bot add-ons that depend on it. Deleting your account is a separate matter from stopping the recurring payment.
Does JOI use messages to develop AI?
The privacy policy says messages help improve replies and develop AI. Its controller is NOVI LIMITED in Cyprus, which is not the operator named in the U.S. terms. Keep sensitive personal information out of a fictional conversation, and don't treat a character's tone as a promise of confidentiality.
Is the Ofcom investigation still open?
No. The regulator's record reports that it closed on July 31, 2026, after age assurance was introduced. It closed without findings on compliance and should not be described as a certification. The record covers a UK investigation. It does not show how Canadian accounts are checked, and it is not a Canadian approval.
How should a Canadian buyer read Neuron charges?
Base a payment decision on the amount, currency, term and tax shown to your Canadian account. The published Neuron figures, including up to 120 for a photo view, are resource quantities, not a Canadian cash exchange rate. You can't work out a local monthly total from them.
How should I use the review-platform rating?
The Trustpilot snapshot we checked showed 3.9 from 263 reviews. It is a platform average credited to Trustpilot, not an editorial score or an independent test of voice, memory or billing. Read individual reports for their date and the issue they describe, then compare them with the terms that apply to your account before drawing a conclusion.
