Choose the controls that fit the story

AI roleplay services are easier to compare once you know what you need: a recurring text allowance, editable character facts, a group cast or a published context size. Nomi gives 50 free messages a day. SpicyChat lists paid contexts from 4,000 to 32,000 tokens. CrushOn advertises groups of 3 to 4 characters. Each figure measures a different feature, so none of them picks a single winner.

This comparison is about ordinary fictional adults. A short mystery, a workplace simulation with invented colleagues and an imaginary travel conversation can each need something different. Start with the setting and the details that must stay consistent, then compare the product control that handles them. A high character count, a bigger wallet or an annual discount says nothing about whether the dialogue is better.

Different controls solve different story problems

A 32,000-token context is not 32,000 messages or 32,000 character slots. In the same way, a daily allowance of 50 messages tells you little about saved memory. Keep each number next to its unit, and pick the row that matches the conversation you have in mind. Prices elsewhere on this page are labelled by currency and platform; we do not infer Canadian tax from a US-dollar offer.

Nomi: character notes and a defined daily text allowance

4.3/5
  • Price / monthCA$12.99/mo
  • Free tier50 msg/day
  • NSFWyes
  • Age checkself declaration
  • PlatformsWeb, iOS

A continuing story has to keep the character's background apart from the latest scene. Nomi advertises backstories, shared notes and Mind Maps alongside persistent memory. These are named tools worth looking at when you plan how to organise a fictional adult persona. They do not tell you how likely a later reply is to remember a particular detail.

The free allowance is 50 messages a day, with up to 400 characters in each input. Paid inputs can run to 800 characters, so the length of a scene brief becomes part of planning. A detailed paragraph may need trimming to fit the free limit even when the account still has messages left. The limit applies to what the user types, not to the length of each generated reply.

Standard includes up to 10 companions and 10 group chats. That helps if you want to keep several distinct fictional characters instead of rewriting one character's description again and again. A group-chat allowance is an account feature, though. It does not show that every participant will keep a consistent voice through a complex scene.

The published web offers are US$15.99 monthly, US$39.99 quarterly and US$99.99 annually. Additional Credits pay for named extra actions, and you need an active subscription to buy them. If you only care about dialogue, look at the text limits first and then decide whether the extras matter. Buying a large credit pack will not necessarily get you better storytelling.

Nomi says plainly that its conversations are not end-to-end encrypted, so invented names and backgrounds are a sensible boundary here. The policy describes deleting personal information in about 28 days, with exceptions. Judge the notes and character controls as features, and treat the privacy and billing terms as separate account decisions. The published feature list supports a practical comparison, but it gives no basis for ranking realism or emotional understanding.

SpicyChat: personas and a published context ladder

3.7/5
  • Price / monthUS$5.95/mo
  • Free tierNSFW on free
  • NSFWyes
  • Age checkthird party
  • PlatformsWeb

SpicyChat's free tier includes 3 user personas. A persona is the role the user brings to the conversation, which is different from a catalogue of AI characters. In ordinary storytelling, this helps when the same fictional adult narrator takes part in several settings. A persona slot is not a saved scene or a message allowance, and it does not guarantee consistent narration.

Paid context windows are listed at 4,000, 8,000 and 32,000 tokens. Context is the material the model can draw on for the current reply. A longer visible history can sit outside that window, and a context limit is not indefinite memory. Keep a short summary of where the story stands instead of assuming every earlier event will carry equal weight forever.

The current monthly prices are US$5.95, US$19.95 and US$29.95, after the change dated 8 September 2026. Annual totals are US$60, US$199.95 and US$299.95. Older accounts may keep their previous pricing until a lapse or a plan change, including a downgrade. For a new character project, go by the terms your account is actually offered, not an old screenshot.

A larger context matters if your inputs are longer, but it is not a dialogue quality score. On its own, it does not show that a character will respect every boundary, hold a particular speaking style or resolve a plot contradiction. Those are separate performance questions, and the published numbers do not answer them.

After cancellation, the account returns to free at the end of the paid period, and records are kept as the help guidance describes. Permanent deletion is a separate action and cannot be undone. That matters if you want to stop paying but keep a fictional project. The context and persona limits give a concrete capacity comparison. They should not be stretched into claims about training, encryption or general retention that the policy evidence does not support.

CrushOn.AI: distinguish the model budget from the cast

3.7/5
  • Price / monthUS$5.99/mo
  • NSFWlimited
  • PlatformsWeb

CrushOn advertises group conversations with 3 to 4 characters. That is a cast feature, separate from how many replies an account can get from a particular model. An ordinary ensemble story can include several fictional adults, but more characters do not mean better continuity. You still need a clear setting and a manageable description of who is in the scene.

The current landing page lists unlimited chats on free models, 100 Pro credits a month and 20 Inspiration Replies a day. These allowances reset on different schedules, so keep them apart. A story running on a paid model is not covered just by the headline about free-model chats. An older wiki's generic 100-message description should not replace the current model-specific details either.

The Standard plan is US$5.99 monthly with 2,000 Pro credits. Premium is US$14.99 monthly with 6,000 credits and a long-term-memory claim. That claim does not define a universal context window or prove that a particular scene will be recalled. Model and tier both matter, and the older free-versus-paid context figures should not be read as current limits for every model.

CrushOn also advertises voice messages and more than 40 voice presets. Having a voice available does not mean live calling, and it says nothing about accent quality. For a fictional character, the voice is a presentation choice. It is no substitute for a clear biography, and it should not be used to imitate a real person. This page covers invented adult characters and non-explicit dialogue.

According to the FAQ, you can delete individual messages only while they are less than 24 hours old. That is a real limit if you edit a long-running story archive. Account deletion is a separate step and may be blocked while a subscription is active. Decide what you want to keep before you think of deletion as a way to revise a plot. The useful comparison is between the published cast, model and record controls, with each number tied to the feature it describes.

Character.AI: pins, Lorebooks and a current continuity issue

4.1/5
  • Price / monthUS$9.99/mo
  • NSFWno
  • Age checkthird party
  • PlatformsWeb, iOS, Android

Character.AI offers character creation and community characters. It advertises unlimited free messages, with possible waiting-room delays. The free tier has 15 pins and Lite has 30. A pin marks information as important, but the number of pins does not measure recall accuracy. In a fictional setting, pinning the core premise is not the same as expecting the full transcript to work as a reliable reference book.

Private Lorebooks are a c.ai+ feature. They are a named way to manage information, not a promise that a saved note overrides content rules or that every reply will follow the intended plot. Character.AI prohibits pornographic content on all plans. A subscription changes which features you get; it does not buy a different content policy.

The web c.ai+ offer is US$9.99 monthly or US$94.99 annually. Lite starts at US$4.99 monthly and varies by region. Read Canadian store items by their own labels, and do not assume a monthly or annual term for an amount that has none. If you will only use a project now and then, the commitment period matters as much as the number of pins.

There is also a dated business issue. On 12 October 2026, the company announced a voluntary Chapter 11 sale process. It said the service keeps operating and subscriptions keep billing. Whether it winds down depends on how that process ends. It would be wrong to describe the service as already closed, and wrong to promise that future owners will keep every current feature.

The announcement says export and deletion are still available. Keeping your own non-sensitive outline of an original fictional setting is a practical way to organise a project without counting on the product lasting indefinitely. We have not tested export migration. The Character.AI alternatives comparison sets out the account and feature differences for readers who want to look at that choice in more detail.

Replika: a persistent companion with editable memory facts

3.5/5
  • NSFWlimited
  • PlatformsWeb, iOS

Replika is built around one continuing companion, with free conversation and avatar customisation. Its Memory section lets users view and remove individual facts. That is useful when a fictional adult character or an ordinary conversation has picked up a wrong detail. Removing a memory entry is narrower than deleting the underlying history, and it should not be described as erasing every copy of that information.

Paid features are split across named tiers. Platinum includes 100 Training uses and 50 Read My Mind uses per week. These are published feature allowances, not daily message quotas. Work out whether a given control matters for the conversation you want before treating a longer list of paid features as a better roleplay product.

Ultra advertises memory improvements, but a feature description is not a measured recall result. A persistent companion may still need corrections, and a long archive of past dialogue does not mean all of it will shape the next reply. The practical question is whether you can see the information used for personalisation and keep the fictional premise apart from real personal details.

The policy describes keeping profile and message data for up to 60 days after the contractual relationship ends. Some financial and device records are kept for at least 10 years. The longer period does not apply to every chat, and the shorter one does not mean all records disappear at that point. Keep each statement tied to its data category.

Deleting the account does not cancel subscription billing. When a fictional project is over, stopping the subscription and removing the account are two separate tasks. Replika's fact-by-fact memory control is a concrete point of comparison. This page does not establish its free message ceiling or a single Canadian price for every named tier. If you want several independent characters or a large context with published numbers, compare those requirements directly instead of assuming every companion service works the same way.

Perchance AI Chat: an accountless browser conversation

2.7/5
  • Price / monthFree tier
  • NSFWyes
  • Age checknone
  • PlatformsWeb

Perchance AI Chat describes itself as a free browser text tool with unlimited messages and no need for registration, an email address, a phone number or a payment card. The page checked on 28 October 2026 gives no daily message cap. That makes account setup a clear point of comparison, while response speed, reliability and narrative quality remain separate questions.

Which tool you use matters. Perchance also hosts community generators, and its separate AI Character Chat page describes other features. Do not assume those features apply to AI Chat. Sharing a domain does not mean every generator on it uses the same model, storage, interface or content policy.

Conversation history lives in browser storage. Clearing site data can delete a local story, and switching browsers will not sync it through an account. The tool describes editable summaries, plus saving, loading and sharing. Learn how these work before you put time into a fictional setting, especially on a device you share with someone else.

The text plugin says prompts and responses are not stored on its server. That is the provider's statement. It is not an independent security audit, a general end-to-end-encryption promise or a rule that covers every saved and shared copy. Skipping accounts makes it easier to start, but you still need to think about the device, the browser profile and what you put into a story.

For ordinary roleplay, you can keep a short fictional premise outside the conversation: the setting, the adult characters and the latest plot event. That is a way of staying organised. It does not mean an external file imports automatically or that the tool recalls everything perfectly. The useful comparison here is local storage and the absence of a signup step. The web page alone gives no grounds to assume a native app, a paid plan or a verified age-assurance process.

Talkie: community characters with platform-specific purchases

3.8/5
  • Price / monthCA$12.99/mo
  • NSFWno
  • PlatformsWeb, iOS, Android

Talkie documents custom character creation and community characters. Its FAQ also admits that older parts of a conversation may be forgotten because of technical memory limits. Both can be true: a varied catalogue can help you find a style of fictional character, but it does not mean that character will hold onto a long plot. Treat the catalogue and continuity as separate questions.

On Android the product is called Talkie: Creative AI Community, and on Apple it is listed as Talkie Lab: AI Playground. Both belong to the same publisher, but that does not mean features, history or purchases are the same across platforms. Before comparing a mobile item with a web feature, check which app and billing channel the item belongs to.

The Canadian Apple page lists CA$12.99 for 1 Month, CA$34.99 for 1 Month Talkie+ Pro and CA$69.99 for 1 Year. These are store items with explicit period labels. They do not give a final total with provincial tax, and they do not promise that every paid benefit carries over to another app. A free install with in-app purchases also tells you nothing about a daily chat quota.

Talkie's FAQ prohibits pornographic content. The Canadian Apple listing is rated 18+, but an age rating does not change the content rules. This comparison sticks to fictional adults and ordinary conversation whatever audience a store label targets. Character descriptions should stay invented and should not include sensitive information about the person using the device.

The privacy policy allows data to be kept for the purpose it was collected and for legal, accounting and reporting duties, with no fixed standard deadline. Account settings include a deletion option, and subscriptions are managed through the original Apple or Google purchase channel. For an ongoing story, the practical questions are which app holds the material, what memory limit the company admits and what the purchase actually includes. The published store prices answer only part of that, and they are not a ranking of narrative quality.

Match the structure of the story to the product control

For a short conversation you return to regularly, a clear daily limit can be more useful than a big catalogue. Nomi's 50-message allowance and 400-character free input limit put the constraints in plain view. Check whether you can state the premise briefly and whether the allowance suits how often you plan to write. This is about planning, not about how many words each reply will contain.

For a larger cast, CrushOn's groups of 3 to 4 characters are the relevant feature. For one narrator across several settings, SpicyChat's 3 free personas meet a different need. For information that needs correcting, Replika's removal of individual memory facts matters more than catalogue size. A fictional adult character should have a clear background, a consistent purpose and only the details the story needs.

For longer continuity, keep a short summary of the setting and the latest events. Character.AI's 15 free pins and Perchance's editable summaries are different ways to organise information, and neither proves flawless recall. The Janitor AI alternatives page compares more product and account limits for readers weighing a different setup.

How we score

Scores are computed from each app's published terms, pricing, policies and store listings on the dates shown. We have not yet run paid test accounts; when we do, experience criteria will be added and the cap on the total score removed. Affiliate links never change a score. Full methodology

Treat biographies, memories and transcripts as stored information

A fictional biography does not need a real address, workplace or private conversation. Nomi says its chats are not end-to-end encrypted and describes deleting personal information in about 28 days, with exceptions. Perchance AI Chat keeps history in browser storage. These are different privacy arrangements, and neither supports a blanket claim that all character chat is private.

Account controls differ too. CrushOn lets you delete individual messages only while they are less than 24 hours old. Replika lets you remove individual Memory entries, but deleting the account does not cancel billing. Before you use any of these actions, find out whether it changes a saved fact, removes the account or stops renewal.

Age labels do not lift content rules. Talkie's Canadian Apple listing is rated 18+, yet its FAQ still prohibits pornographic content. The adult-platform policy comparison covers those distinctions and the privacy terms. This page stays with ordinary stories about fictional adults and gives no content-access instructions or filter workarounds.

Use the smallest set of features that answers the requirement

If you write a little every day, compare that habit with Nomi's 50-message allowance. If you need more current context, look at SpicyChat's published ladder from 4,000 to 32,000 tokens. For a group scene, CrushOn's 3 to 4 character groups are the starting point. These are concrete places to begin, not proof that any provider will give every reader the best dialogue.

Keep the fictional premise short, know where history and saved facts are stored, and check the commitment before you pay. Character.AI's 12 October 2026 sale-process announcement shows why product continuity belongs next to features and prices in any long-term decision. This comparison helps you choose controls and leaves quality claims nobody has measured unscored.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI chatbot is best for roleplay?

The published facts do not point to one overall winner. Nomi gives 50 free messages a day; SpicyChat publishes paid context limits up to 32,000 tokens; CrushOn offers groups of 3 to 4 characters. Pick the feature that suits your story instead of scoring unlike quantities against each other.

Does a bigger context mean permanent memory?

No. SpicyChat's paid context sizes of 4,000, 8,000 and 32,000 tokens describe how much context is available. They do not promise indefinite recall. Character notes, pinned items and visible conversation history are different kinds of information, each with its own controls and limits.

Can a free plan support recurring conversations?

Nomi states 50 messages per day. CrushOn keeps free-model chats separate from 100 monthly Pro credits and 20 daily Inspiration Replies. A recurring allowance has to name both an action and a reset period, and a free-install label alone tells you neither.

What do persona slots tell me?

SpicyChat lists 3 free user personas. That number counts separate user roles. It is not the number of AI characters in a group or the length of a model's context. Persona count matters when you want distinct fictional identities for different stories.

Can I use roleplay without creating an account?

Perchance AI Chat's page, checked on 28 October 2026, says no signup is required and claims unlimited messages. History stays in local browser storage. Do not confuse that tool with every generator or other chat product on the Perchance platform.

Does a paid Character.AI plan remove its content restrictions?

No. The c.ai+ web offer at US$9.99 monthly changes paid features, not the ban on pornographic content. Pins, private Lorebooks and subscriptions all work under the same rules. This comparison covers fictional adults in non-explicit dialogue.

Is the Canadian app price the same as a web subscription?

Talkie Lab's Canadian Apple listing has a CA$12.99 item labelled 1 Month. That tells you the store item and its term. It does not tell you there is an identical web purchase, that account history transfers or what the final amount with provincial tax will be for every buyer.

What happens when I stop using a story account?

It depends on the product's own account and billing rules. Deleting a Replika account does not stop billing, and some of its financial and device records are kept for at least 10 years. CrushOn lets you delete individual messages only while they are less than 24 hours old. Check what an action actually does before assuming it erases everything.
